I had both stained and white moulding on my hardwood flooring to match white baseboards. I have rooms with and without shoe molding, and the only time I felt like a new coat of paint was needed was after we had some floors refinished -- the sanders really scuff them up (with or without a shoe). I wouldn't have it at all, if possible. It not only makes the baseboards look smaller (and they are already too small in my opinion) but it makes the floor look like its creeping up the wall which at first I was OK with but now after painting I really dislike. I Own a flooring Company in Florida and with all our installs we add in for shoe molding instead of quarter round. Maybe my eyes got used to this look. Im at the point now where I am touching up everything in the house and painting all the white trim pieces (window/door frames) a nice bright pure white. The white looks more elegant and clean!
